Island Lakes

Part of the Greater Winnipeg metropolitan area, Island Lakes is a neighbourhood within Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Transportation

Island Lakes is particularly car friendly. The majority of properties for sale are a short drive from the nearest highway, and it is convenient to find a place to park. On the other hand, Island Lakes is not very transit friendly. Nonetheless, the neighbourhood is served by a few bus lines, and bus stops are ordinarily around the corner. Island Lakes is not very conducive to pedestrians because very few common errands can be run without the need for a car. However, it is convenient to travel by bike in Island Lakes as the topography is flat.

Services

Daycares and primary schools are convenient to get to as a pedestrian from any location in this neighbourhood. In contrast, high schools are not plentiful and thus not always within a short distance. When it comes to food, it is very difficult to get to the closest grocery store without needing a vehicle from anywhere in this part of Winnipeg. Residents are served by a few restaurants and coffee shops as well.

Character

The character of Island Lakes is exemplified by its relaxed environment. Green spaces, such as Bois-des-Esprits Window Park, are very well-spread out and there are approximately 20 of them nearby for residents to unwind in, making it easy to get to them. This area is also very quiet, as noise from the streets and other parts of the city is rarely an issue.

Housing

In Island Lakes, the vast majority of dwellings are single detached homes, and the remainder are mainly small apartment buildings. This neighbourhood is primarily composed of four or more bedroom and three bedroom homes. Nearly 90% of the units in the neighbourhood are occupied by homeowners and renters occupy the remainder. Roughly one third of homes in this area were built following the year 2000, while the majority of the remaining buildings were constructed in the 1980s and the 1990s.
