Part of the Greater Toronto Area metropolitan area, Thornlea is a neighbourhood within Markham, Ontario.

Transportation

Thornlea is very car friendly. It is especially convenient to park, and most properties for sale are a short drive from the nearest highway, such as Highway 407. In contrast, Thornlea is not particularly transit friendly. Nonetheless, the neighbourhood is served by a few bus lines, and it is very easy to get to a nearby bus stop from most properties. Cycling is difficult in this neighbourhood as there is a considerable amount of slopes, and Thornlea is home to a quite bad bicycling infrastructure. Walking in this part of the city is also not very common, despite the fact that most daily needs are easy to carry out by walking.

Services

Property owners in Thornlea usually have to rely on a vehicle to access the closest grocery store. On the other hand, Thornlea is a fairly good place in which to go out to eat. With regards to education, daycares and high schools are convenient to reach on foot from most homes for sale in this neighbourhood. In contrast, this area does not contain any primary schools.

Character

There is a broad selection of green spaces in Thornlea. There are a few parks nearby for residents to visit and they are very well-situated, resulting in them being easy to access from the majority of locations within Thornlea. Finally, this part of the city is relatively quiet, since there are few people out and about on the streets, although noise levels are higher closer to the railway line, Highway 407 or Highway 404.

Housing

The predominance of single detached homes in the housing stock of Thornlea is an important part of its character. Most of the housing growth in this neighbourhood happened in the 1980s. This part of Markham offers mainly three bedroom and four or more bedroom homes. Nearly all of the population of this neighbourhood own their home and the rest are renters.
